Designer & strategic problem solver

I work directly with clients to understand, prioritize, and articulate the “Why?” of the products and services they have in mind. I co-create an audacious vision with them, and collaborate on developing a roadmap for getting them across the finish line to that vision. Examples of the outcomes I deliver include:

  • Strategic roadmapping for a product/service portfolio

  • Co-creating mission/vision statements

  • Moonshot reimaginings of products, services & experiences

  • Ethnographic field research to actionable insights

  • Value proposition development and testing

  • Frame a challenge to set up broad user-centered exploration

“Patrick is a rare leader who can formulate strategy, get large groups on board, and excited about just about anything. He gets things done by example, initiative, and not by being pushy or forceful. He's also an excellent communicator and innovator with an open mind.”

Ildikó Tóth, Independent Consultant

Design thinking community builder & evangelist

I thrive on bringing people together, inspiring, and energizing them around a vision. I’ve built and led human-centered design communities of practice for six years in Melbourne, Australia and Portland, OR, and I help my LUMA enterprise clients do so at scale. In fact, I’ve been building communities, online and off, for more than 20 years. Examples of the outcomes I can deliver include:

  • Developing an internal community of practice

  • Scaling your design thinking program

  • Creating a communications plan

  • Programming for featured presenters, hands-on sessions, and networking events

“Patrick is a phenomenal design leader who has helped my organization level up and grow our human-centered design maturity in a short time. I found his ability to adapt human-centered design education for our audience to be catalytic in energizing a cohort of change-makers within our organization.”

Cara Kleid, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Outcome-driven veteran facilitator

I've planned and led more than 1,500 hours of outcome-based project workshops, GV Design Sprints, and training sessions for teams ranging from two to nearly a hundred, across industries, continents, and cultures, both in person and remotely. Examples of the outcomes I can deliver include:

  • GV Design Sprint facilitation

  • Bring stakeholders together to explore and assess future ideas

  • Map interactions and emotions in a customer’s journey with a product or service

  • Work with users through co-design to help shape the future of a product, service, or process

  • Align a team on near-term priorities or long-term strategic objectives

  • Rally a team to generate breakthrough, out-of-the-box ideas

  • Prototype an improvement to a product, service or process

  • Create a great story about an idea for a new service

“Patrick is a world-class facilitative design leader, teacher, evangelist, innovator, and community builder whose energy and enthusiasm are something to behold. He actively cultivates the very best in the people he works with and he genuinely delights in their successes.”

Design Thinking Enablement and Education

Equipping others with the confidence and capability to use human-centered design in their own work gives me immense satisfaction. I’ve been delivering instruction in design and related fields at the university level since 2008. As a Senior Instructor for LUMA Institute since 2015, I’ve led hundreds of Practitioner and Facilitation enablement workshops for clients on six continents. I’m a facilitator and coach for Stanford Graduate School of Business’s LEAD Incubator, and I co-developed and taught Design Thinking for Business in RMIT University's Executive MBA program in Melbourne, Australia. I have a M.A. in Communication & Design and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning.

“Patrick’s passion for Design Thinking continuously inspires me. I admire his ability to captivate an audience and entice people to engage. Patrick is collaborative, leads with authenticity, and approaches every situation with an open mind. He effortlessly bounces between playing the roles of an efficient organizer, expert facilitator, and master motivator.”
